What is Philly Cheese Steak?

Traditionally a Philly Cheese Steak is a sandwich that is made from thinly sliced pieces of beefsteak and melted cheese. It is usually served in a hoagie roll. Now it is a popular keto low net carb meal when you serve it by itself with no hoagie.

My kids usually eat on a hoagie or on a bed of rice. I like it by itself especially when I am trying to eat low carb.

Can I make Philly Cheesesteak ahead of time?

Philly cheesesteak is the perfect meal to make ahead of time and for meal planning. I like to make and freeze for an easy weeknight meal. I prepare the meal and pepper mixture and let it cool to room temperature.

Then I place in a air tight container and place in the refrigerator. Once you are ready to serve, place back in the skillet and heat then top with your cheese and melt as indicated in the recipe.

It is great in the refrigerator up to 4-5 days. Makes a great lunch the next day for my husband. I just put in an individual container and he can heat up in the microwave.

Variation Ideas:

  • Change the Protein – If you prefer, you can change the protein by using ground beef or even sliced chicken. Ground turkey works great too.
  • Use different cheeses – American cheese, swiss cheese and Cheez Whiz are great alternatives to Provolone Cheese. Make sure you shred your own cheese, pre-shredded cheese as added ingredients.
  • Make a Sandwich – If you want to stick with a low carb meal, you can serve it on a keto bread or lettuce wraps if you want a sandwich
  • Add in Vegetables – My favorite addition to this meal is adding in mushrooms.
  • Philly Cheesesteak Casserole Recipe – I like to prepare my meat and peppers as indicated in the skillet. You can then place in a casserole dish for melt the cheese in the oven. This is a great low carb philly cheesesteak casserole meal.
  • Add in Cream Cheese – If you want a creamier texture to your Philly Cheesesteak add in a block of cream cheese.

Tips for the best Philly Cheesesteak:

  • Select the best Steak – You want to select meat that has reasonable amount of fat on it. You also want it thinly sliced. I always check with my butcher at the meat market for assistance.
  • Optional Peppers – We used green and red bell peppers but you can also use yellow or orange. I usually get the ones with the best price.
  • Carb Loving Family – When I prepare a meal, I usually try and give my carb loving family options to choose from. Even though I am eating this with a some extra vegetables, I will make sure I have some hoagies or rice for my family.
