Ingredients:

For the Burgers:

  • 1 lb lean ground beef
  • 1/4 cup finely chopped onion
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1 teaspoon chili powder
  • Salt and pepper to taste

For the Chile Topping:

  • 1 can diced green chiles, drained
  • 1/4 cup diced tomatoes
  • 1/4 cup diced onion
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • Salt and pepper to taste

For Serving:

  • Lettuce leaves
  • Sliced tomatoes
  • Avocado slices
  • Pickled jalapenos
  • Low-carb burger buns (optional)

Instructions:

1. Prepare the Burgers:

  • In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, chopped onion, minced garlic, Worcestershire sauce, ground cumin, chili powder, salt, and pepper. Mix until well combined.
  • Divide the mixture into four equal portions and shape them into burger patties. Make a slight indentation in the center of each patty with your thumb to prevent them from puffing up during cooking.

2. Grill or Cook the Patties:

  • Preheat your grill or skillet over medium-high heat. If using a skillet, add a drizzle of olive oil to prevent sticking.
  • Cook the burger patties for 4-5 minutes on each side, or until they reach your desired level of doneness. For medium-rare, aim for an internal temperature of 145°F (63°C), and for medium, aim for 160°F (71°C).

3. Prepare the Chile Topping:

  • While the burgers are cooking, heat olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add the diced onions and garlic, and sauté until softened and fragrant.
  • Add the diced green chiles and tomatoes to the skillet, and cook for an additional 2-3 minutes. Season with salt and pepper to taste.

4. Assemble the Burgers:

  • To serve, place each burger patty on a lettuce leaf or low-carb bun if desired. Top with a generous spoonful of the chile topping.
  • Garnish with sliced tomatoes, avocado slices, and pickled jalapenos, if desired.
