Onion bhajis are a popular Indian snack or side dish, often found at curry houses or as street food. These crispy, golden fritters are packed with flavor and make a perfect appetizer or side dish. The air fryer version cuts down on the oil, while still giving you that crispy texture. With a blend of spices and fresh onions, these onion bhajis are crunchy on the outside, tender on the inside, and bursting with aromatic flavors.
Ingredients:
- 2 large onions, thinly sliced
- 1 cup chickpea flour (also known as besan)
- 1/4 cup rice flour (for extra crispiness)
- 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
- 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
- 1 teaspoon coriander powder
- 1 teaspoon garam masala
- 1/2 teaspoon chili powder (optional, for heat)
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- Salt, to taste
- Fresh cilantro, chopped (optional)
- 1-2 tablespoons water (adjust as needed)
- 1 tablespoon vegetable oil (for brushing or spraying)
Instructions:
- Prepare the Onions: Slice the onions thinly and place them in a large mixing bowl. Sprinkle a little salt on the onions and let them sit for 10-15 minutes to release excess water. Afterward, squeeze out any excess moisture from the onions using your hands or by pressing them with a paper towel. This will help the bhajis stay crispy.
- Make the Bhaji Batter: To the onions, add the chickpea flour, rice flour, turmeric powder, cumin seeds, coriander powder, garam masala, chili powder, baking powder, and chopped cilantro (if using). Mix everything together. Gradually add a little water (start with 1 tablespoon) and mix until you have a thick batter that holds together. You may not need all the water, just enough to bind the ingredients.
- Preheat the Air Fryer: Preheat your air fryer to 350°F (180°C) for 2-3 minutes.
- Form the Bhajis: Take small handfuls of the onion mixture and shape them into small fritters, pressing them gently together. You can make them as small or large as you prefer, but keep in mind that smaller bhajis will cook faster and become crispier.
- Air Fry the Bhajis: Lightly brush or spray the air fryer basket with oil. Place the onion bhajis in a single layer in the air fryer basket, ensuring they are not crowded. Lightly spray the top of the bhajis with oil for an extra crispy finish. Air fry at 350°F (180°C) for 10-12 minutes, flipping the bhajis halfway through the cooking time. They should be golden brown and crispy on both sides.
- Serve: Once cooked, remove the bhajis from the air fryer and let them cool for a minute. Serve them with a side of mint chutney, tamarind sauce, or yogurt for dipping.
