Ingredients:

For the Tofu:

  • 1 block (14-16 oz) firm or extra-firm tofu
  • 3 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons cornstarch
  • 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil (for frying)

For the Sauce:

  • 1 cup General Tso’s sauce (store-bought, such as from Sprouts)
  • 1/4 cup peach nectar
  • 1 teaspoon red pepper flakes (adjust to taste)

Optional Garnishes:

  • Sliced green onions
  • Sesame seeds

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Tofu:
    • Press the Tofu: Wrap the tofu in paper towels or a clean kitchen towel and place a heavy object (like a skillet) on top to press out excess water. Let it sit for at least 20-30 minutes.
    • Cut the Tofu: After pressing, cut the tofu into 1-inch cubes.
    • Marinate: Place the tofu cubes in a bowl and add soy sauce. Gently toss to coat and let them marinate for 10-15 minutes.
  2. Coat and Fry the Tofu:
    • In a large bowl or zip-top bag, combine the cornstarch and flour.
    • Add the marinated tofu cubes to the cornstarch mixture and toss to coat evenly.
    • Heat vegetable oil in a large skillet or non-stick pan over medium-high heat. Once hot, add the tofu cubes in a single layer (do not overcrowd the pan). Fry until all sides are golden and crispy, turning occasionally, about 8-10 minutes total.
    • Remove the tofu from the skillet and drain on a paper towel-lined plate.
  3. Prepare the Sauce:
    • In a small saucepan, combine the General Tso’s sauce, peach nectar, and red pepper flakes. Stir well.
    • Bring the mixture to a simmer over medium heat, allowing it to thicken slightly and the flavors to meld, about 5 minutes.
  4. Combine and Serve:
    • Add the fried tofu cubes to the saucepan with the sauce. Gently toss to coat the tofu evenly with the sauce.
    • Cook for an additional 2-3 minutes, ensuring the tofu is heated through and well-coated.
  5. Garnish and Serve:
    • Transfer the sauced tofu to a serving dish.
    • Garnish with sliced green onions and sesame seeds, if desired.
    • Serve immediately, ideally with steamed rice and steamed or stir-fried vegetables.
